Doorways to Healing - Couples and Cancer

Rob and I attended Doorways to Healing this past weekend!

It was great for the both of us!

Cancer can be so hard on a couple and communication is such a huge part of it.
For some reason couples can clam up and then just go on with this huge thing between the two of them.
It's only when we feel safe enough to open up that we do and then we get stronger.
I'm so grateful Rob went- because it sure wasn't an easy thing to do.
We were taught a few very important things and given some tips to take along on our journey.
And how amazing to meet other couples who "get" what we go through every day
.....still.
We have some amazing friends, but thank God they really don't know how it goes.
It's good because we can be with them and it's very free of cancer.
We love our friends happy and untouched by cancer, and we love our friends who've battled cancer.

We love Doorways to Healing and our so thankful to the kind and loving Doctors!

Supplements for Breast Cancer

Well it's very difficult at times to decide how you'd like to go - conventional medicine or holistic!

I had my appointment at Sloan with an Integrative Medicine Doctor and well I learned a few things to help simplify my journey to try and keep cancer from returning.

Sloan Kettering as with most will only go on what has solid studies.  What this means is yes there are studies out there that have been done on mice for example, but they need to be studied in humans.  Some of the exciting things I have heard about just don't have the studies to let the doctors say yes- go ahead and take that.  It was a bit sad to me, but in the end it's my decision weather to try something or not.  And I'm not that brave at this point.

I was given this sheet on a study that had to do with exercise- I need to do 30 minutes a day of aerobic activity!  He calls this the 4th meal of the day!

I was happy to hear that yes- they will recommend
Vitamin D- at least 2000/a day
Now this is my dose because I have low vitamin D
You need to have your levels tested to see where your levels are and then your doctor can tell you how much you should be taking.
Vitamin D is very important even if you are not dealing with cancer- get checked and make sure you have the right amount- it's very important for your bone health as well as they are finding people with cancer often have low Vitamin D.  I'll blog more about D when I get all my info together.
There is the normal range which some say is between 30 and 80 and then there is the number you want- I'm shooting for 50- I'm at 31 too low for my comfort.

I have linked to iHerb so if you click on the bottles it will get you there!

Curcumin- the pill- all that turmeric talk is for real.
Dose:  1 capsule- 2xday

GreenTea- the pill- drinking the tea is not enough to make a difference- you will need the pill.
EGCg- 1 Vcap/2xday

Omega-3
2 soft gels/2xday

I will also be taking my iron, baby aspirin, and a multivitamin along with these- Oh and my Tamoxifen!
Here's the sheet he gave me : I was told of things NOT to take- being I am a hormone positive breast cancer survivor.

Exercise is very important- so he also suggested stretches for me because of my back.  I slouch- and it's worse since my surgeries - he gave me a website to look up stretches that I should be doing at work because of sitting at a computer.

Find good stretches for the office- HERE and HERE

Dr. Deng gave me a great advice sheet and I LOVE the mini-vacation every night!

And last but not least he told me to eat better he said they recommend high protein - low carbs
Proteins being beans and light meat
No white stuff- sugar - white bread - rice- potatoes
He even mentioned South Beach Diet
He did say to limit intake of high Glycemic food and gave me this sheet:

Maricel if you are reading this - I miss ya!  Make sure you get in your mini-vacations!

 updates 12/01/2010-
Vitamin D- updated up top

Taking Iron for Anemia
I am taking iron and well I sometimes feel nauseous- I also noticed a change in my stool.  This article really helped me with my iron supplement questions:

Mary had a little fluff and everywhere Mary went the fluff was sure to follow

LOL

I call her fluff

because I stuff her with fluff

That's all I can think about when I think about my fluff (the little thing I stuff my bra with).  That songs goes through my mind as I run around my house asking Rob if he's seen my fluff.  I really am growing to love my new breast...but I do think about accessorizing and taking extra care of it/her whatever you may call it.

Tats (OK I'm not a tattoo type but it's fun to look)
Sometimes I wish I could be that daring....

Stick on Nipples
Who knew there were so many to choose from and that cross dresser shops have some really good ones.

Or the best of both world with no pain, but still something pretty that isn't a fake nipple.  I still have a hard time with the purpose of a fake nipple.  Well it would be nice to have matching sides- so I get that but other than that?

So pasties maybe the better choice for me

Pretty No-Underwire bras
I had no idea how hard it is to find pretty wireless bras- if you find any alert me please!

Scar cream

And here she is over 6 weeks out of radiation

Everything seems to look good.  I have a little discoloring under my breast, but that may go away.  The doctor showed me how to move my implant around as to keep scar tissue from forming and making it hard.  I honestly had no idea it could move so much until he moved it all around.  After all this I'm starting to realize it's mine and it's a part of me!
Oh and I've weened off of zoloft......that's another funny doctor story for another time.

Radiation stuff

Now Radiation is done and I'm not able to really do much as far as exercise because of some pain.  My survivor friends had not told me about the pain involved which was the right thing to do.  I mean not everyone has pain and so why hear about it and stress about it.

I was going along nicely until my last week and the burn started to get worse.  I had thought my pain and burn had peaked, but I was mistaken.  I now believe it has peaked and I'm on the road to no pain or at least a lot less.

My last 2 treatments I was given gel pack treatments which felt really good.  They are gel pack that actually stick on your skin.  The pain I felt was burning and then shooting or aching pains mostly where I had drains and stitches.

This is a picture of my last drain....they are not very big so that was a good thing!

With the pain there is the itch!  I kept trying and trying to scratch it and I realized that I was scratching where I have no feeling so the itch was actually inside my body.  These things added together make you a little crazy.  Chemo was hard because it makes you sick, tired and depressed, but radiation is really painful for me anyways.  I did cry a few times because it did hurt pretty bad.  What helps-

Aquaphor, cortisone cream, Tylenol PM, Miaderm, loose fitting shirts- and wife beaters.  You have to keep applying lotions so it's better to have an undershirt of some sort on under your clothes.  During the day if it's hot you may want to use corn starch.  Apply it under you arm and breast where your skin may rub and cause soreness.  Also if you sit in front of a fan it can be really soothing.  I spoke to a couple of my survivor friends and they said they too had pain around incisions and also itching.  They assured me that it will pass and it's all proof that my body is healing.  My sweet friend Betty talked with me about managing pain and the way she counts through pain.  I myself imagine the pain as a wave and I try to imagine the wave (pain) coming in and then going away.  This is all the stuff you learn when you listen to those pain management CD.  My other friend Barb helps me a lot by letting me know it's all normal!

SO.....here's a glimpse of what a radiation burn can look like.  Mine as you can see has started to peel.  I am most sore under my arm where I had drains 3 TIMES- yuk.  Also under my breast was super sore!

I read to be nice to your doctors and let them see the real you.  They need to get to know you as a PERSON!  So for radiation I made sure to connect with my radiation techs.  They were all good people.  I would talk with them and get to know them a little and sometimes bring them in a treat.  In radiation you get a time slot and you try and get a time you like, but it's 1st come 1st serve.  As I was going along a slot opened up at 7am which is a popular time slot, but my techs gave me the option.  They knew I was from out of town and they actually started to like me.....I think.  Seeing them everyday you have to like each other or it will be not as pleasant.

Here's another thing- dress nice and wear make-up for your simulation!  I didn't and I regretted it everyday of radiation.  I looked like hell for simulation....and they take a picture of you for identification.  Every day I had to look at it on the screen and want to scream.  They joked about it a lot because it was THAT BAD!
It's amazing how we are judged by our appearance.....I noticed my doctor when he came dashing in my room....he sort of look startled and then smiled big and said "We really need to get a different picture of you....I can barely see your face"......You know he was thinking before he walked in as he was looking over my file with my picture, "What a Hot Mess this woman is".  Oh and then in radiation I was able to carry my file from radiation to my doctor's appointment so one morning I was reading through it and I was a little surprised to see that they made a note of me being a "decent" looking woman and something about my state of mind.  I gathered they were making notes about my "state of mind" and my ability to understand what they were telling me.  I found it pretty interesting.

What I'm trying to say is that when I took care of myself and looked good I felt better and I felt as if I was being seen as Danielle Podrazil not another number.  I'm mean the one appointment my doctor commented on my shoes-see they are paying attention...lol.  Just smiling makes a big difference on how you are cared for.

Oh and take a pain med before simulation because it can be painful for your affected arm.

I have to mention this book I'm loving right now:

Intimacy after Breast Cancer
Gina M. Maisano

It's so hard to go through losing a breast, but then when you realize you will be put into menopause as well it SUCKS double.  I had no idea the grief menopause would cause.  I will not have any more periods and for all the times I cursed having my period I would take 2 periods a month not to do this menopause thing.  BUT I'm not going to be that way I'm going to be grateful for everything I have.  I think back to when I complained about weight, breasts, my period and now look!  I'm the heaviest I've ever been, I'm going through menopause, and my right breast is gone!  How dare I complain like I did.
Any way Intimacy After Breast Cancer is a great book to help you realize- YES you have changed, but who's to say in the end you won't be EVEN BETTER than you were before.
There is a wonderful line in the book that goes like this:

"The doctors reassure you that your body will heal, but what about your spirit?  What about that inner resolve that got you up every morning, helped you through each chemotherapy session, and kept you together when you wanted to fall apart?"

and this:
"The beauty that is within you must be uncovered.  It's time for the magnificent victor of the most frightening battle you've face to emerge."

The name of the book can be deceiving because there is so much more in it than intimacy.  It helps you to get back to being a girl again....and feeling pretty.  I never knew how much I loved being a female until they took my breast, hair, hormones, ability to have a child, oh and gained 10-15lbs.

Reading this book has been so motivational to me.  God bless Gina Maisano; she is a beautifully intelligent women!

After I claimed I was "Cancer Free" I still wasn't satisfied that people would understand so the other day when I was on the phone with a doctor's office at Sloan I asked them to have a nurse call me back.  I wanted to see what she would say I should say to people who ask, "Are you cancer-free?"

So while I was at work the phone rang and it was a church who we advertise in their church bulletin.  Well they called to invited us to a mass they were having for their advertisers.  And guess what- the mass is to pray for good health next year.  How crazy?  Maybe I'm totally nutz - But I took that as a sign.  Never were we invited before and we had been doing this bulletin for years.  OH and did I mention it happens to be the church that I attended healing mass?  I have such a love for that church.

Back to the nurse- she called back and I asked and here's what she said....
"Danielle when you met with Dr. Seidman, he was assured by your surgeon that she got all the cancer, because the margins (area around my tumor) where clear.  When they found cells in your Sentinel Node they went back in and took all the nodes and when they were clear it was concluded you were "cancer-free" at that point.  Dr. S prescribed chemotherapy and tamoxifen to get you to a cure.  Dr. Powell prescribed radiation in another step to bring you closer to cured."

So I think that pretty much summed it up

I don't know about anyone else, but I knew nothing about breasts until all this.  Here is a diagram that may help someone else.  When you do you own self exam knowing what is in your breast maybe helpful to you.  I am a very visual person and I feel so much better knowing what is in my breasts.  As the diagram shows my cancer, which is the most popular cancer starts in a duct and leaves the duct.  After cancer has left the duct the next place it travels is to your lymph nodes.  Doctors can determine the 1st lymph node taken by the cancer cells and that is called the Sentinel Lymph node.  My cancer cells were found in there.  After they found those they went back and took more lymph nodes (and everyone has a different amount)  they are the green lymph nodes in the picture and they are axillary lymph nodes.

So when you are checking yourself - CHECK ALL OVER!  My tumors were directly under my nipple.

I'm praying for a dear friend having scans today...will you say a prayer for her as well?

Things are starting to get a little bit back to normal- Dinner together-
Dinners together are sweeter than ever!

I had such a great trip with my dad last time to NY- we had a great dinner together and it was peaceful and so nice. I hadn't gotten to do that very much with my dad and it was nice.
Mom and I walked yesterday and that was also special.
Last night Rob and I looked at a house together and it was wonderful so be doing something other than cancer...something for our future.
Drove Lucas to school this morning and I was never so happy to be up at 5am to drive him to school like the other parents. I am really learning to treasure every moment. Looking at his blue eyes across the car - it just doesn't get any better than that. God is so good to me.
Tonight we are going to a cancer survivor dinner.... Stinks I have to drag a drain along! I get to see one of my favorite survivors- Betty!
Thanks for all the support and prayers!
I LOVE YOU

Thanks Rob

XX

Well I had a pretty hard week and Rob had to hear about it- So Thank You Rob!

I Love you... Love you... Love you

I struggled with thoughts of cancer coming back and it was triggered by one thing and it just stayed with me. It's so hard and as much as I tried to just keep it to myself I just let it out on Rob one night and I feel horrible. I wasn't mean, but he was already under stress. I may try and speak to a counselor just to make sure I get my feelings out on someone else. Family is great but sometimes telling them all your feelings just doesn't do them any good.

Rob knew something was up because I hadn't gotten in my walks(and the weather was no help)and he did get me to start up again. He walked with me one night -my whole 2 miles.....and then walked 2 again the next morning. It was so nice walking and talking. I love Rob so much. For most people this would be a really happy thing, but sometimes the happy moments only remind how much I don't want to leave him. How much I'm afraid of dying and leaving him alone. It's very screwed up, but I'm assuming at some point this will change for me. I had the same feelings with Lucas. Why at times do I have happy times that scare me? I should just be happy
for happiness. This is where cancer is ruining other parts of my life and I let it. I need to stop doing that, but when you are feeling down it's hard. It's like you are in a hole and can't get out.

Now this morning I'm home alone and I feel alone and scared so I will just have to keep myself busy.

I know positive attitude is very important, but sometimes when there is so much emphasis on it it makes it hard on us. I think oh brother I wonder what my cells are doing now that I stressed like that. It doesn't help in my book I'm reading ANTI CANCER that I'm on that chapter. He talks about lab rats all injected with the same about of cancer- then the rats are divided up - 1 group lives there normal fun life--2nd group lives, but they are shocked randomly, but they were are also given the ability to learn how to stop the shocks---3rd group shocked randomly with no way to stop the shocks. This added stress showed that the rats who were the most stressed had a worse outcome. The second group actually did well..considering they were getting shocks- I guess because they knew they had some control. It boils down to feeling helpless. I definately need to not feel helpless!!! I mean really I'm not helpless- I have a chance to exercise, eat right, pray and it is my body and in the end it will be what it is but I will have the last say! Now how did they know the rats were feeling helpless....they had no sex nor did they care to eat much. Interesting huh?
Oh and I did cry for those poor rats!

We all need to be less stressed and resolve any thing bad we are holding!

I'm on the upswing and it is definitely thanks to my wonderful husband. I also have to say I'm so grateful to have great friends to comfort me when I'm down. Thank you Amber, Amy, Krista, Michelle, Shelby, Becky, Vicki and Barbara for being there for me this last week as I struggled. I also have to mention my FB friends from high school- what AMAZING people I went to HS with. SCC....SCC....SCC! I was able to go out dancing and it felt so good. Thank you LORI- the amount of prayer you dished up for me was truly amazing to me and I felt the graces of all of it. I love you girls -Catie, Denise, Darci, Diane! The guys who check on my Tim (my fav redhead) and my other Tim- 2 tough survivors! If I forgot anyone this week it's due to CHEMO brain...or old age.

I was blessed to receive a mass card for Mother's Day from my Aunt. I also rec'd from my brother's mother-in-law a mass card and a beautiful Crystal necklace for my last chemo.

The girls at Breast Cancer.org have been great.....we all started chemo the same time and we are all struggling lately......must be some sort of cancer healing cycle...seeing we don't have our other cycles anymore! Remember in your prayers all the girls who don't have as much support as they should. Not everyone has a great family support system.

On to something fun- Falsies
Eyelashes that is...I'm getting better at wearing them so here's some tips.

Look at this picture- something is up with one eye right?
I could figure out for the life of me what was wrong. I take pics of myself sometimes to see what I look like. Weird? Maybe - but I hadn't noticed my weird eye until the picture. Well - here's the thing....when you have no lashes it's easy to get your eyeliner on the under part of the eye (the part closest to the eye)because there are no lashes to follow. So I ended up cleaning off the black that was under the lashes and this is what it looked like:
Totally better.....also I had to move the lashes up a bit.

Sometimes I think Bald isn't that bad...maybe I should/could go out like this:

I really can't wait till my hair starts to grow! NO sign of lashes or brows....fuzzy head but that's it.
BUT REALLY HAT AND HAIR IS JUST BETTER FOR EVERYONE:

Today I speak at mass and tomorrow I speak at 3 masses. I will be at church a lot this weekend which will be great! I'll get to pray a lot.

Surgery Tuesday- found front closure bras at walmart for $7 a piece so I hope they work. I have to start getting my clothes together. I'm praying the surgeon does well and may the best implant end up in there! Say good-bye to Mr. Tissue Expander!

Here he is fully expanded and ready to blow...LOL:

I prayed hard to the Blessed Mother and she was good to us! Thank you Blessed Mother!

Saturday Fun........Breast Cancer Tips

When Rob was away with friends - Lucas and I had spent our time doing a lot of nothing and hanging out together! It was like old times when we were on our own.

I made one of Lucas' favorite- marinated tofu! I must say I hadn't had any in a long time and it was good. I've been reading a book - How I Cured Cancer Naturally by Eydie Mae

I'm enjoying this book because the woman talks of her battle with breast cancer and although I wouldn't do what she did- I love reading about her and her husband together making the journey to Ann's place. Then when they got home they started a garden. Eydie gives a lot of tips on starting up your own little garden at home. Eydie uses a living foods way of eating and includes some of her favorite recipes.

In the book the women actually visited Ann Wigmore at here mansion where she taught her how to heal herself.
soooo
I am also reading a book by Ann Wigmore's book- Be Your Own Doctor
(I am not being my own doctor- I LOVE my doctors and I do whatever they tell me, but Ann talks about eating and growing your own food)
Ann is a very interesting person with a lot of knowledge and she had a pretty interesting life. She speaks of God as well and I like that.

So Ann talks about eating WEEDS.........yeah like the weeds in your backyard! She mentioned how strong dandelions are and how healing they are. And you know what it sort of made sense to me. So I went right out to the back yard and searched out some weeds for salad. Good thing the lawn guy hadn't come. Also I realized that I was better off picking weeds in an area where no animals visit. I happened to have a plant box with some weeds.
Oh and don't eat the brickie leaves...lol

Ann says you should sneak some of these in your children's sandwich- nice idea

It was a sweet afternoon to enjoy the sun and all the bees out doing their job!

We ate really good all day- I was so proud of myself and Lucas.

Veggies got a bath.............

Speaking of bathing your veggies

Environmental Working Group puts out a list of fruits and vegetables with the most pesticides.

You will definitely want to buy your apples ORGANIC!
NOTE: These were tested the way we eat them- they were washed- and if they are a fruit or vegetable we peel they peeled them before testing them. SO even if you wash them they still have pesticides. They didn't use any of the washes on the market BUT the pesticides are taken up by the fruit and vegetable as a whole so it's highly unlikely they would really help. You decide on that.

So if I buy cucumbers that are not organic I peel them- whether it's cutting down on pesticides not sure- but I feel better. Cucumbers are middle of the list. The bad list I won't buy unless they are organic.

Here's the top 15 with the most pesticides:

Peaches
Apple
Sweet Bell Pepper
Celery
Nectarine
Strawberries
Cherries
Kale
Lettuce
Grapes (imported)
Carrot
Collard Greens
Spinach
Potato

Here's the 15 with the least pesticides:
Onion
Avocado
Sweet Corn (frozen)
Pineapple
Mango
Asparagus
Sweet Peas (frozen)
Kiwi
Cabbage
Eggplant
Papaya
Watermelon
Broccoli
Tomato
Sweet Potato
